What I’m learning
While I've been coaching for many years, I've always had the backing of a larger company to find my clients. Branching out on my own has been exciting and educational. Recently, one of my dearest friends who is also a coach asked me what I've learned in the process of creating my own coaching business. I hadn't thought of that question before and really had to think about that answer. Since that conversation I've continued to ask myself that same question: What AM I learning? Aside from the business logistics, here are a few of my biggest lessons:
1. I'm able to make more definitive decisions in a shorter amount of time. Normally, I'm a researcher, and even at that point I wonder whether it's the "right" one. I now look at my choices with a different lens. I ask myself how impactful the decision will actually be and how much it truly matters in the end.
2. I'm balancing the bigger picture with the details and rate of investment. Will it really matter if I have the perfect logo or business card? What about my color scheme? While the appearance of marketing collateral is important, for my purposes I had to think of the greater meaning behind those choices. I wanted clean lines, easy to read text and something that reflects a bit of me. Spending hours upon hours trying to come up with the right shade of green is not valuable for me, nor will it really matter in the grand scheme of my business.
3. I'm building on my bravery skills. Those who know me will probably say that I'm a fairly private person and mostly an introvert until our relationship has grown. And, I have perfectionist tendencies with the work I create, but have learned to become more comfortable sharing what I consider my “work-in-progress” for others to review. This is because I allowed myself to realize that for now, it is “good enough” and that I have freewill to edit the information at any time. Take this Facebook page, for example. I can guarantee I will want to make adjustments to the format and perhaps my cover photo. But if I waited until it was "perfect" in my mind to publish and share it, it might never have been published.
All of these “life lessons” feel freeing and empowering to me and I am now starting to apply them to other areas of my life.
Working with me, I can help you uncover your own lessons. I can help you grow in ways that result in a sense of freedom that you didn't even realize was missing.
